Who needs light therapy lamp?
Light therapy lamps are often recommended for individuals who experience some type of seasonal depression. The main type is SAD, a form of clinical depression with symptoms that typically start sometime between September and March, and go away when the days become longer in April or May. Symptoms typically include sadness, moodiness, fatigue, weight gain, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Nearly 10.8 million people in North America suffer from SAD.
How does it work?
Light is the biggest external factor that controls our body clock. It controls our mood, energy and performance throughout the day by controlling the release of hormones such as melatonin which make us drowsy and cortisol which keeps us alert. Human bodies are programmed to run in sync with natural light of the sun.
However, we live in an era where we spend 90% of our daily lives indoors, under artificial static light which does not mimic the light of the sun. This causes our circadian rhythm to become out-of-sync, leading to problems such as difficulties falling asleep, waking up in morning, and a lack of energy and focus at work.
You can help "resync" your internal body clock using light therapy. When you use a light therapy lamp, the light from the lamp hits your retina, and nerve impulses are transmitted to the pineal gland to enhance the effectiveness of serotonin and other neurotransmitters, which can help boost your mood.
Can I just use my regular lamp as a light therapy lamp?
No, a regular lamp is simply not bright enough. You need a full, early morning, outdoor level of illumination. Our lamps produces full-spectrum light (CRI >90). Composed of a larger range of the visible light spectrum means a higher quality light that more closely mimics the qualities of natural sunlight
Can I wear glasses while using the lamp?
Yes, non-tinted glasses will not interfere with the effectiveness of the lamp.
Are there any side-effects?
If used as instructed, the device is safe. In rare cases, temporary nausea and headaches can occur and can be reduced
by sitting further away from the device.
Does it emit any damaging UV light?
No, all UV light is filtered out by the lamp
Can I use the lamp daily?
Yes, we recommend that the light be used daily, especially during the dark winter months or if circumstances do not permit
exposure to sufficient sunlight.
Can I use the light more than once a day?
It is recommended that the light be used in the morning, since this will allow for regulation of the body clock. Erratic use of
the light may negate the positive effects of using the lamp.
How long should I use the lamp for every day?
Usage time can vary between 15-60 minutes, depending on your needs.
Do I need to keep my eyes open while using the lamp?
Yes, the light works by activating the receptors in the retina. However, you do not have to look directly at the light.
